ActiveLIFE is one of Lifelines' additional assessments were physical activity of the participants is monitored by an accelerometer. This assessment is a collaboration between Lifelines and the Radboud university medical center, department of Medical BioSciences. This research is funded by the Dutch Heart Foundation and Brain Foundation Netherlands, and the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

The goal of ActiveLIFE is to create a large Dutch dataset of thigh- and wrist-worn accelerometry. These data will allow to determine lifestyle behavior such as physical activity, sitting behavior, and sleep. These data will be combined with information about other lifestyle behaviors, health, and risk factors. Combining these data will contribute to the refining of current physical activity guidelines and accelerate lifestyle and prevention research. ActiveLIFE aims to collect ~60,000 accelerometry measurements in the 4th research round of Lifelines.

ActiveLIFE is an additional measurement, part of the 4th research round measurements. Lifelines participants wear a triaxial thigh-worn accelerometer (Axivity AX3, settings: 100 Hz, 8g) for 8 consecutive days. A subsample of at least 10% will be asked to wear both a thigh- and wrist-worn accelerometer. Raw accelerometry data will be processed into physical activity metrics, including steps per day, time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, light-intensity physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep. Age: ≥8 years old Participant is invited for the 4th assessment (4A).

Allergy to one of the materials used for the accelerometry measurement.

July 2025 - December 2028.
