Results from the Mini Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) performed among adult Lifelines participants at general assessments 1A and 2A were processed into derivatives by the University Center of Psychiatry, according to the manual for MINI version 5.0.0.
These derivatives should be used to define if a participant meets the criteria for a certain psychiatric diagnosis (sections: mental health and secondary & linked variables).

The MINI derivatives can be requested in the Lifelines catalogue. When this data has been used in your research, you will have to include a reference to the the following paper:

Derivatives are available for all Lifelines versions of the MINI.
Note that MINI v1 differs significantly from the later versions. Specifically, its derivatives are based on diagnoses from the previous year, whereas other versions focus on current diagnoses.
For the (digital) MINI v4 used in assessment 2A, items that were subdivided from the original MINI v2-v3 items were rejoined, which made calculations of derivatives and comparison with the other versions possible.

In March 2025, an updated version of the MINI derivatives was added to the Lifelines catalogue. This update includes two major changes: 1) correction in panic disorder diagnostic criteria, and 2) update of availability of MINI derivatives.

To meet diagnostic criteria for Panic Disorder, individuals must experience at least four out of thirteen possible additional symptoms during their panic attacks according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Therefore, an individual that reports reporting that at least ten of these symptoms are not present during an attack, cannot meet diagnostic criteria for Panic Disorder and should be coded as a control.

However, the original diagnostic script contained an error: it incorrectly classified participants as controls if they reported four or more symptoms as not present, instead of the correct threshold of ≥10. Moreover, participants with missing data on any symptom were mistakenly assigned a diagnostic status of “NA.” These issues have now been corrected resulting in:

• A revised variable for Panic Disorder diagnosis with a higher number of identified cases
• Corresponding updates to related variables, including:
  1. mini_anyanx_adu_c_1 → mini_anyanx_adu_c_2 (any anxiety problems)
  2. mini_anyipp_adu_c_1 → mini_anyipp_adu_c_2 (any internalizing problems)
  3. mini_pd_adu_c_1 → mini_pd_adu_c_2 (panic disorder)

In addition to correcting the coding error, the script has been adapted to match the new data release structure, including a conversion to the updated variable names. This has allowed for the inclusion of additional participants in the dataset:

• Assessment 1A: ~200 newly coded participants
• Assessment 2A: >10,000 additional participants (from incomplete release to finished release)
• Assessment 3A: newly added for all participants
