Quality of Life (HHIA)
The Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults - screening version (HHIA-S) is a 10-item self-assessment scale that aims to assess the presence of hearing loss and its impact on the quality of life (section: wellbeing & subjective health). It is a shorter version of the HHIA, which in turn is a modification of the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (HHIE) 1)
Note that quality of life is also assessed in Lifelines using the RAND and SWLS questionnaires.
Other ear- and hearing-related problems are assessed with some general questions.
Scoring
The 10-item screening version of the HHIA contains 5 emotional (2a/b/e/i/k), and five social/situational (2d/f/h/j/l) items, selected from the 25-item version of the HHIA.
Participants indicated if the description in the item was applicable to their life: yes (4 points), no (0 points), or sometimes (2 points). Higher total score values indicate greater perceived handicap.
Note that one basic question about potential hearing problems (1) was added, to determine if participants should fill in the HHIA-S, and two questions about limitations (2c/2g) were added but should not be included in the scoring.
